Apple has made the new iPhone OS Firmware 3.1.2 available for its iPhone (Edge), iPhone 3G, iPod touch and iPhone 3GS users through an update. The firmware has no new features but includes some very important enhancements and fixes bugs which prevent iPhone from waking from sleeping. The update is definitely going to help the users a great deal. The firmware also addresses the issues that prevent the cellular network services until you iPhone restarts. It also fixes bugs that can potentially cause crash when you are streaming videos.

The products that are compatible with this firmware update include the iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. Updating your iPhone to this OS firmware requires you to connect your iPhone to your computer with the help of the USB and then start the iTunes. You can then proceed and click on the “Download and Install” button to get it activated. The Apple update also includes a new carrier update called the (.IPCC) file for the AT&T consumers bringing the carrier version number to 5.6.

The users who already have their iPhone jailbroken or unlocked on firmware 3.1 should exercise caution when updating to this new firmware because in the absence of new jailbreaking and unlocking tools, there is a major possibility that the ability of your iPhone to jailbreak or unlock may get hampered. The complete jailbreak guide for Mac OS X and for Windows is possible with the help of PwangeTool 3.1.4. The release ensures that you can make the update and still keep the baseband intact to 04.26.08.

Jailbreaking the iPhone 3G 2.1/2.2 enables you to get an access to sounds, themes, games and lets you install a number of other third party applications. You can use MMS, emulators and adult content as well. However, you must make sure that by running the jailbreaking software you are not jeopardizing the warranty of the iPhone.

Jailbreaking your iPhone opens up a world of free applications before you. Applications such as the Terminal and theming which looks nice and adds to the fun are easily available. The homescreen unlocking on a 2.5G iPhone also becomes very easy. This is achieved if you try the method of neutering by performing a completely reversible unlock on the baseband. Unlocking the baseband is somewhat difficult on 3G iPhones and you are dicey even if you happen to unlock the baseband.

Another application which is ensured by the software is tethering. However, you would have to be careful when you use this application because service providers such as AT&T carries out a deep investigation to find out if the users are using this application to violate their plan and may switch you off when they find out that you are indeed using it to violate their plan. However, there is no such threat for users who do it occasionally. Although there are close to 100 companies that promise jailbreaking and iPhone unlocking solution there are only a few who provide a complete solution for the iPhone 3G 2.1/2.2. So, you should make sure that you do a good research of the company from which you intend to get the software.

The popular Push Notifications for iPhone have come again in a next firmware version. The previous version allowed applications to alert a user whenever an event takes place. It also helped getting around some problems caused by the ban on third-party apps that run in the background.

Though this exciting launch of the next firmware version was planned for September 2008, the delay was caused due to some problems with MobileMe and syncing. According to Apple, the beta version of iPhone firmware version 2.2.1 has been seen working with the push notification system.

The new push notifications for iPhone are beneficial for applications like instant messaging clients and other applications that have software running on a server to notify the user. However, push notifications don’t work for applications that need to be run constantly.

It is barely a few weeks passed, when the Apple iPhone hit the headlines for its striking launch across India. It received a firmware update 2.1 on Friday. Company seems is not in mood to peeve its customers with big glitches on their handy iPhones. This firmware is termed as a big update since it will fix all the kinks that iPhone users have been facing until now. The list includes battery life, app crashes, back up lag and dropped calls.

Hopes that Apple would provided iPhone and iPod Touch users with worth wild features and fixes in the newest firmware upgrade where dashed rather quickly on January 15th. While many had hoped for even a simple copy and paste function, it would seem that Apple had other things on their agenda, specifically getting the two devices ready to handle what would come from the SDK release in February. But dashing hopes wasn’t all that iPhone firmware 1.1.3 has done, it also has managed to cause some pretty serious and annoying issues that you usually expect a firmware to fix, not create.

This new firmware sports a few interesting new additions. iPhone users can now enjoy the luxury of texting multiple contacts at once, a function standard in nearly all cell phones today. You can also completely move around all of your icons by simply pressing on any one of them until they shake, then drag them around that page or even on to another one. Until the SDK comes along you won’t have a real need to utilize more than one page with the standard icons, but thanks to the newest feature allowing you to add bookmarked icons directly to your home page, you might have a need for a page or two if you’d prefer never to open the favorites button in your

The Google Maps application received a majority of the love from this update, most notably its newest ability to triangulate your location using nearby cell phone towers. Although I don’t recommend using that feature while driving as its radius isn’t quite exact, it helps a lot when you’re trying to figure out exactly where you are. They have also made it possible to place your own pins on the map, making it much easier to figure out how to get to your destination from that dead end street you took a wrong turn on to. And if those features weren’t enough for the Google Maps application, you can new view a hybrid map.

Unfortunately users are reporting all sorts of errors from both the installation process and after the fact as well. Issues with installation seem to be geared around iTunes version 7.6, but mostly the problems occur after the installation. The most common issue seems to be that messages sent and received show up out of order within that specific chat session. This can be mildly confusing when trying to reference a few hours or days back in your conversation. Many have also reported that the internal speaker has also cut out for them along with several Bluetooth devices failing to work even though they were fine in 1.1.2.

While the new features add some depth to the JesusPhone, many of us are still left wondering when we will get cut and paste. With the SDK around the corner, perhaps a third party application will beat Apple to it. But honestly, I’d prefer that my iPhone caught up with the technology that every smart phone already offers.
