Web App Review: Digg.com

Having an iPhone allows me to stay connected 24/7 which is quite an advantage. Being the huge news/current events fanatic I am, Digg.com is by far one of my most frequented websites. When Digg launched their iPhone web app, it greatly improved how fast and easily I could browse through the latest happenings. Discussion of this application has been posted EVERYWHERE as it launched right around the time the iPhone did. However, I have yet to see anyone actually review it.

The load times on the application are very fast thanks to the incorporation of AJAX into the site design. Once a page loads, you don’t have to wait for another load when you access each story. Logging in is very simple and easy to do, allowing you to Digg stories from your iPhone. Unfortunately, that’s where the positives end.

When you search by category, they’ll give you the first page of that topic. When you hit Page 2, you’ll wind up on Page 2 of the general category. You can’t comment on any of the submissions, nor can you see when the comments themselves where submitted. If there is a comment war you’ll only get bits and pieces as it doesn’t even show all the comments either. Putting all of that aside, there is no way to even see the new submissions section. That is by far the worst part about this web app.

While it does provide a lot of great usability, you don’t get anywhere near the full Digg experience. The question is, do I keep using it for the fast load times and ease of use, or do I go back to the standard Digg.com site so I can gain some functionality back?

Related: Digg is a great source to find the popularity reviews on everything from home theater systems to speakers and especially car subwoofers and amplifiers. People in fact consult digg before they buy flat panel tv. Of course this is not the age of televisions and one or 2 dvd players in the market.

iLyrics Makes iPhone Karaoke Easier!

It’s fairly easy to find the lyrics to your favorite song online. All you have to do is search the artist, title, and the word lyrics. But when that search pops up, you’ll find a ton of sites, many of them full of pop-up ads and other junk. If your surfing on your iPhone over WiFi or EDGE and your looking for song lyrics, picking through sites like these can be really frustrating. Apparently TheMacBox agree’s.

The Web app named iLyrics by TheMacBox allows you to search for your favorite song lyrics hassle free. As it is optimized for the iPhone and is developed in AJAX, you’ll be able to navigate through the app fairly quickly regardless of how slow EDGE actually is. All of the lyrics are provided directly from LyricsWiki.org which is a lot more reliable than most of the other sites you’ll come across searching through Google.

This is one app that would be excellent to see converted over with the upcoming release of the SDK. Picture it scanning your library when you sync your iPhone and downloading the lyrics for each song you have.

As we get closer to the SDK launch, we’ll set up a poll for you to vote on what apps you want to see the most on the iPhone.
